The Traveling Storyteller: Techniques to Create Compelling Photos of a Place (Me Ra Koh & Brian Tausend) FULL
Limited Capacity full

There was a season when we never dreamed of doing travel photography because we couldn’t imagine capturing an emotional image without a person in it. Little did we know how much portraits prepared us for travel photography! Is getting paid to travel and take photos one of your dreams? Did you start as a portrait photographer and find yourself in a new season with older kids and a growing desire to explore the world? If yes, you’re in great company! Join us for a fun, hands-on shooting session as we open up the world of travel photography!

We’re going to treat our time together as if we’re on assignment for a travel publication! What types of images do we need to capture what every publication expects? How do we create story without people? How do we capture emotion without faces? These are just a few of the questions we’ll be answering. We’ll also demonstrate specific camera settings for different subjects. Not everything is best captured with a shallow depth of field. (It’s true!) The one thing you always want more of is time. We’ll teach you how to build a strategic shooting schedule based on time of day and direction of light, as well as composition techniques that make readers and viewers say “I wish I was there…” What do you do with your beautiful imagery once you’re home? Learn how to write a rich pitch to editors and the different ways you can still be compensated for images that don’t make the cut. All levels are welcome to join us! Be ready to laugh, learn a few new tricks, and see how much your portrait background set you up for success with travel photography!

Bring your camera and a small journal or notepad for notes. Optional gear: You're welcome to bring polarizers, ND filters and a tripod for some of the photos. But they aren't necessary.

This outdoor boutique program will take place on the grounds of the plantation.

Key takeaways:
1. Essential elements every travel piece needs for publication
2. Determining camera settings based on the subject (architecture, mood, landscape, etc.)
3. Identifying your location’s personality to create an engaging story
4. Strategic shooting schedules based on time of day and direction of Light
5. Capturing emotion without faces
6. Different ways to be compensated
7. How to write a rich pitch with “the hook”
